The best way to make sure that your teeth and gums remain healthy is to have a great at-home teeth cleaning regimen, and to come to our dental practice for biannual dental exams and teeth cleanings. At Pioneer Dentistry of Willis, our Willis Texas dentist, Dr. Okey Okechukwu, can help to ensure that your smile stays beautiful and healthy.

When you come in to see our Willis Texas dentist for an exam, as part of your full checkup he will assess the health of your gums. If it is found that you have gingivitis, a common precursor to gum disease, he will most likely recommend that you have several regular dental cleanings over the coming months in order to have your gums return to good health. If your gums appeared to be in excellent health, he will most likely tell you to have a dental cleaning every six months to remove any plaque that is left behind from your daily cleanings. When plaque remains on teeth, it turns into tartar. Tartar is a hard, mineralized substance which tightly adheres to teeth. Tartar can only be removed with professional dental cleaning instruments; no amount of tooth brushing will ever be able to remove plaque. If plaque stays on teeth, it encourages the development of deep pockets to form between your teeth and gums. When this occurs you have the beginning of gum disease. Plaque, tartar, food debris and bacteria will all gather in these deep pockets and infection will form. If this problem develops with your gums, our dentist will probably recommend that you have a periodontal scaling and root planing treatment at our office. Many people refer to this treatment as a deep cleaning for the gums. It is extremely effective with helping gums return to good health. Unfortunately, unless gums are treated for gum disease, the gum disease will only continue and eventually cause extensive tooth loss.
